4 minutes and 43 seconds of drone warfare history - updated

This is the latest footage of the June 1 strike launched by the Security Service of Ukraine against Russian strategic aviation in the deep rear of enemy territory, thousands of kilometers from Ukraine.  This unparalleled coup, codenamed Operation Spider’s Web, employed domestically-designed Osa drones from the First Contact company, which has been making AI-powered UAVs since at least early 2024.

Of course, Russian propagandists have tried to minimise the operation’s success, even placing undamaged aircraft exactly on the burned shadow where wrecked aircraft had stood.  But then the videos roll!

UPDATE, 6th June 2025

The excellent Jake Broe reviews the damage, among other current news:

It hasn’t dawned on the dipsh-ts yet, but that drone attack opened up Pandora’s box.

That drone attack, as you put it, was aimed at doing to Russia’s strategic air fleet what was done to the Black Sea Fleet - driving it out of the theatre and thereby protecting Ukrainian towns and cities from ballistic strikes.  Would you prefer that nothing was done and the strikes freely continue?  And what, anyway, are you claiming that the Russians are now doing that they refused to do before?  They have refused themselves nothing, except nuclear - and that only from fear of the world’s political and economic response.

Donald Trump’s limp response to the attack, btw, was unamerican if we measure America by any positive moral standard.  I don’t expect you to obediently traipse along behind him.

What might be the economic and political ramifications be if an “unidentified intermediary entity” were to execute a drone attack targeting 50 commercial airliners at Heathrow Airport? It is also worth contemplating the possibility that such an event could already be part of someone’s retaliatory agenda given an attack on one-third of Russia’s trident nuclear trident system is far from a trivial maneuver. Lavrov has already publicly indicated that he believes MI6 was at the center of planning the attack. Lavrov does not play games with words; he means what he says.

Meanwhile, the Doomsday Clock ticks ever so closer to the stroke of midnight.

If Russia attacks a NATO country, NATO will respond.  Trump will be forced to end his appeasement of Putin, and forced to apply the long-overdue maximal sanctions.  And why would the oligarchs want Putin to bring about the final destruction of their wealth?  A Russian nuclear attack would be even worse for them, bringing a nuclear response.  And why would the Siloviki wish Putin to bring about the incineration of themselves and their families?  Trump appeases Putin because he wants to isolate China and plunder Russian resources.  But not even China could continue backing Putin if he attacks a NATO country.  It would change everything.

Like Medvedev and Solovyov, Lavrov can say anything he wants, and frequently does.  But unlike them he can’t not consider the consequences of turning words into deeds.  He speaks for immediate effect, because threat is a useful tool against vacillating liberal governments.  But it stops there.  Self-preservation is much, much higher on his list of priorities than Eurasianist fantasy.

All that said, it’s good that the Muscovites are so rattled.  They are criminals and they are bent on evil.

Setting NATO and Russia aside, drone warfare/terrorism is a game changer in which virtually ANYONE and EVERYONE can engage in. All it requires is a bit of knowledge, depraved imagination, and the determination to execute the plan. A small, determined group of terrorists can cause immense destruction to an entire nation or multiple nations, particularly those nations that are technologically advanced.

Those who believe that Russia, Israel, or any other nuclear power would never, under any circumstances, resort to using nuclear weapons are idiotic fools.
