The Beast of Bolsover
One of the most regrettable consequences of the emergence of New Labour has been the dominance of smarmy, hypocritical and utterly cynical politicians whose sanctimoniusness and PC touchiness makes them intolerable. In that lot, a few remaining dinosaurs from Old Labour provide some welcome respite and brilliant entertainment. And no one is better at this than Dennis Skinner, nicknamed the “Beast of Bolsover”. Skinner is a law unto himself, shall we say. And in the early years of New labour, he must have caused many an embarassment to the Blairities trying to distance themselves from the hard-edged socialists of Skinner’s generation. Yesterday, Dennis Skinner let loose another one of his parliamentary gems (hasn’t he so many under his belt?). And it is a fun read (the video is fun to watch too). I’d take Dennis Skinner over the smarmy, sanctimonius Blairites any time. Skinner is lively whereas listening to New Labour’s endless preaching about PC morality bores me to death. Posted by Phil on December 09, 2005, 08:18 PM | # Al, I didnt say that Britain should be run by Skinner’s kind - only that his kind is preferable to the hideous cultural Marxists currently running the show. Skinner’s type would make for an entertaining but permanent opposition and would obviously be less dangerous. 3

Posted by friedrich braun on December 10, 2005, 12:40 AM | # Speaking of cocaine and politicians…it would be difficult to top Quebec’s new leader of the second largest party in the province - Andre Boisclair, who’s not only an open homosexual but also did cocaine while being minister.
... PQ members, faced with a host of charmless candidates in a field of eight, followed the lead of Quebec voters who told pollsters they were ready to forgive Boisclair’s cocaine indiscretions. ... The campaign was jolted in September when Boisclair admitted he used cocaine on several occasions as a cabinet minister.

I would like to meet the man by chance, say in a quiet train compartment of the sort that even second-class travellers were accorded thirty years ago. There I should ask him frankly why he does not speak up for the fading interests of his own, English working-class constituency ... why he is still obedient to the noisy sanctimony of anti-racism, though he must know it to be false morality ... why, just once in his political life, he won’t do something truly selfless and courageous and speak out against the most heinous oppression this island has seen since the Norman Conquest? I suppose he would get up to his feet double quick and go and find another compartment. 6

Posted by Matra on December 10, 2005, 02:44 PM | # First time I heard of Dennis Skinner was the week Germany reunited (Sept/Oct? 1990). He was on some programme, probably Newsnight, going on about how the jackboots (yes, he used that word) would soon be marching across Europe again. The audience (myself included) were rather stunned by not just his remarks but his tone. Edwina Currie (Jewish I think) then gave him a tongue lashing for stereotyping Germans! 8

Posted by Lurker on December 10, 2005, 11:22 PM | # Ah the German reunification! What should have been a happy moment in history brought lefties out in a wailing and gnashing of teeth. Not long (maybe only days) after the wall came down and reunification was obviously theoretical possibility if nothing else. I remember a (West) German leftie was interviewed on the BBC, he was angrily attacking the whole idea. East Germany must continue he ranted, very upset poor thing. If only I could remember who he was. An enduring leftist myth in Britain (maybe elsewhere?) was for some years “racism” of West Germans against East Germans, it suited the concept of race as a social construct. I mean, really, how would that work in reality? You never hear about it now though. 10
Posted by Morseman on May 15, 2009, 07:07 PM | # In the current problems, at least I can reasonably expect that Dennis did not push his expenses to the limit, because he did not take overseas trips at the taxpayers expenses and he seems to be that rare person in UK Government at present “an honorable person”. It seems to me that my representatives did not want to be held to account by the freedom of information act, not for the stated issue of their constituents right to privacy, but for the fact that most of them knew what would be open to public knowledge of their activities. They may claim to have acted “within the rules” but they were the rules that they made and the rest of us labour under tax rules that do not apply to them. 11

But even the saint of Birkenhead has some slightly troubling stuff in the list of the expenses he has published on his website. Kate Hoey seems, like Dennis, to be a person of high moral principle. She hunts too! I’m looking forard to seeing her dragged to the Speaker’s Chair. Soon I hope. There is no question that Skinner’s entertainment value is higher than that of his colleagues but if you believe that Britain would be better off being run by comrades of Skinner’s political kidney then please consider it possible that you may be wrong.
