Birth in a same-sex marriage must be a sticky proposition. Especially if it involves a turkey baster.

It was stupid to walk into the “define nature” trap.

Why should one trouble with defining nature when you can simply define marriage (which is what they were debating)?

Wonderful. I’m arguing with someone who’s never heard about the Birds and Bees.

Define Nature? You just conceded.

Nature is a penis penetrating a vagina to inseminate an egg and produce a child. Describe how homosexual “marriage” can produce the same result and I’ll concede your point.

Every single one of your thousands of human ancestors successfully reproduced. A few may have also engaged in homosexual relations, but not one ever broke the line by committing to a homosexual “marriage”. That’s Nature.

Nature may give you hemorrhoids in old age. Homosexual “marriage” may well give you a colostomy bag and worse.

Could use a flank attack, it might go slightly off-topic but you can hit them on a another hot-button issue:

If you can’t define nature you just voted yourself out of the Darwin/evolution/creationist debate. If you can’t define nature - no evolution for you and the Creationists just won.

The dream twofer would be to later catch the same commenter attacking creationism and drag up his inability to define nature.

Actually, he is correct.

- Humans are part of nature too.
- Since humans are part of nature too, then by default everything we do is natural.

Why must every stupid plant and animal define nature for us, and we can’t?

Someone can call something noisy, blue, that it hurts someone, but someone can never call something within the natural universe, “unatural”.

Here’s an interesting one, again from the Guardian - a recent thread on homosexual marriage.  Some bright spark objected to the appeal to Nature used by a supporter of traditional marriage.  He said:-

“Define Nature for me and I’ll cede your point.”

Define Nature?  Can’t be too difficult, surely.

I am talking about human nature. We are not blank slates, humans have certain inherited biologically determined characteristics and part of this is what I believe to be our innate social customs. By our nature, i.e. the part of ourselves that culture and upbringing cannot modify, we expect social approval to be of unions between male and female. Homosexual marriage disrupts this, causing social unease.

There is a scientific basis for suggesting that we have an evolved sense of morality, and it would cause social unease if we were to abandon the use of moral terms and concepts. So it should not be hard to appreciate that we may well also have an evolved disposition concerning marriage (or socially regarded pair bonding in general) and that the negative psychological effects of attempts to change this social convention count against homosexual marriage.

...I would probably not use this argument, persponally I oppose homosexual marriage simply because it reduces the perceived normativity of the institution of heterosexual marriage (a perception which I think has a strong positive social value) rather than what I said above.

Nature is the totality of the material and how that material acts.  Conducting oneself according to Nature could be done consistent with is what adaptive for the continued life of human beings or consistent with the general pattern of entropy that will eventually sweep away all life.  Only the former avoids nihilism; homosexual marriage and child-rearing are not adaptive and therefor embrace nihilism.

Okay, it took me a few comments to appreciate the argument the opponent was trying to set up.  Tan’s two posts really sealed the deal.  It’s this, ‘Homosexuality occurs throughout nature so why suppress it’, right?  Correct me if I am wrong or enlighten me further please.

I come to this site because there are many, many very bright contributors.  I am the kind of man who is naturally on side so I will persist until I get what I consider a fresh take because I understand you guys are on to something that I should know.  But there are many would-be allies out there not quite awake and not quite bright enough to catch everything immediately.  I am not suggesting you dumb down the site, it is great, but maybe sometimes a statetment of the obvious would help.

The best response to give is this:WE really find homosexual extremely disgusting and bizarre. Extreme disgust-Martha Nussbaum pay close attention-is a sound basis for the law. Ignore it liberal political on the larger society. The Orthodox Russinas have the right idea:burn down any church that allows a homosexual marriage ceremony to be performed. Liberals should be exterminated once and for all. Quick and snappy and airtight argument now isn’t it.

A few words got compressed out. I think it went like this:ignore the popular sentiment political liberal…at your own peril!!!! This issue would never arise in a muslim society. Anybody read Anthony Daniels-Ted D.- recent article about Britain being the first European country to implode into race riots. I certaintly hope so. Time to clean the degenerate filth out such as Billy Brag and Pete Townsend. A good house cleaning is long over due.

Haha.  I left a comment on that entry; I cited the farm murders and the real opinion of ZA blacks towards whites, plus something about little miss sunshine receiving a dose of loving from “a gang of libidinous Matabeles.”  It was too highly spiced for the judaeo-conned:  They declined to publish it.  Cowards, as usual.

Nature in this sense means natural / normal which really is a synonym for usual.

It is overwhelmingly usual for men to be attracted to women because that is natures way of getting us to procreate (although we have long since figured out how to do one without the other).

It is unnatural (uncommon and against natural instincts) to favour same sex relationships.

Those who engage in them (especially male on male) tend to bring upon themselves unpleasant and freq life shortening side effects.
