RhodesiaAnybody here interested in 20th century history should know about Rhodesia. If you don’t, something I wrote over 30 years ago will provide a quick update: http://jonjayray.tripod.com/rhod.html Now that Zimbabwe (Rhodesia’s successor State) is one of the most brutal and mismanaged polities on earth an email I received recently is interesting: “At some time in the early to mid-1990s, Ian Smith gave a speech at the Heritage Foundation in Washington. The auditorium was packed, the lobby was packed, and the crowd spilled out of the building. It was the largest turn-out for such a gathering that I have seen in 20+ years. Most of those in attendance were too young to remember the “Unilateral Declaration of Independence” of 1965, and could barely remember the betrayal of 1980. However, they had some inkling of what this man had done and what he had tried to do, and were there to see a living remnant of 20th century history. Smith was completely forthright about what his goal had been: the defense of Western Civilisation—nothing more and certainly nothing less. The respect accorded him verged on reverence, and he was thronged with autograph seekers. Yes, Mrs. Thatcher should have dismissed the advice she was given in 1980 (along with the advisors who offered it) and retained Muzorewa. But the real villain of the piece is the clueless Harold Wilson and the gaggle of parlour pinks who surrounded him and ran his government in the swinging ‘60s. They got the praise of the Wise and Good, their honours and their pensions, but the horrific price was paid by the immiserated unfortunates down in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe.” Posted by jonjayray on Sunday, February 19, 2006 at 07:22 PM in World Affairs Comments:2
Posted by karlmagnus on February 19, 2006, 10:48 PM | # Wrong, JJR. If the electorate votes for a bunch of inept Reds, it deserves to get them—unless you believe as I do, that 98% of the population shouldn’t be trusted with the vote in the first place. The problem with the Rhodesia settlement was that the electorate FINALLY came to its senses and elected a decent PM, she ran on the platform of encouraging the new Muzorewa Smith-backed government, and then turned round with her quisling Foreign Secretary Carrington and sold them down the river. I get MUCH more angry when I’m betrayed by my own side. GWB is a master at this art, and from the look of it, Cameron will be as well. If I’m disfranchsed in this manner, I have a right in equity to organize a military coup, which I would support against Cameron but not against Blair or Harold Wilson, whom the halfwit voters elected fair and square. 3
Posted by Al Ross on February 20, 2006, 04:18 AM | # The only way for Rhodesia to remain sane was for Smith’s government to permit massive unlimited White immigration(not easy in the face of sanctions) in the hope that in future the country would be an island of civilisation in the Darkness. It would, of course, have been surrounded by potential enemies but then so is secular, Chinese-run Singapore, lying, as it does, between the Muslim states of Indonesia and Malaysia. 4

If you don’t, something I wrote over 30 years ago will provide a quick update An acquiantance of mine is (white) Rhodesian. Her family fled the country four years ago. She was bright, so she managed to get into an Ivy League School in the US on a scholarship (a white Rhodesian on a scholarship to an Ivy League School? How did that happen?? - I guess the fact that she’s a woman might have helped somewhat). But she returned to Britain because her mum and dad are here and she didn’t want to stay away from them (especially after all that they’ve been through). She has some interesting stories about the way things have gone down there in “Zimbabwe”. 6

But no,we,the White world, will continue to support the Black dictatorships with food, loans[never to be repaid], and free parking at the UN.“Cry,the beloved country"should have been about the Whites who built it and were disenfrancised by their White brethern. SAD! 7

But,as always,soldiers win battles,politicans lose wars. SEMPER FI 8

Posted by Neil Craig on February 25, 2006, 01:10 PM | # I think the main problem with Africa is thet the Europeans drew lines on the map & told the locals which country they were in. This meant that government became a matter of grabbing all the goodies for your tribe. 2 examples; Biafra. That country was murdered because they had oil & Nigeria’s governing tribe didn’t. Everything I have said elsewhere about Yugoslavia applies 10 fold there except that in Yugo we involved ourselves on the absolute principle that it was right to kill people because Moslems & Croats (but not Serbs) had the inherent right to scede & in Biafra we involved ourselves on the absolute principle that they didn’t. Any country where only members of the largest tribe count is going to be badly run - ask an Ulsterman. 14
Posted by Lurker on February 25, 2006, 06:08 PM | # Neil has a point. I think the problems in Ulster could have been solved a long time with careful redrawing of the border plus massive bribes to get people to move around to the “right” areas. Anathema in todays politics of course, really the idea that a smaller NI would only contain Protestants, where’s the diversity? What about the “community”? True all those people wouldnt have had to have died and probably a lot of money saved in the long run but we have to see the bigger picture.
