Of mice and men

This CNN.com article should give plenty of food for thought for minimizers of racial differences. The next time one of these folks repeats that worn-out old “we are 99.9% the same” mantra you can finish the sentence “as mice”!

What that means, of course, is that not only are tiny genetic differences important, but so are the differences in expression of genes that are present in both types of organisms (eg, the tail gene in humans vs. mice).

Note also that if mice are ~99% genetically similar to humans, with an ~80% direct one-to-one correspondence of identical genes, and even a ~40% correspondence in overall genetic regions, then the “absolute genetic similarity” argument falls apart - unless one wishes to assert that a mouse litter constitutes a greater genetic interest for a human than does another human.

Only genetic distinctions matter when comparing genetic interest, as Salter makes perfectly clear.

This is so very interesting to me, because it seems (I know I’m speculating wildly here) almost as if scientists are doing this as a big fat middle-finger to all the high priests of PC.

To continue receiving funding scientists are required to emit copious squid ink when dealing with race.  It’s okay for them to be relatively honest between the covers of their books, but on the jacket and during interviews they generally have to keep the race-deniers happy.  The thin edge of the wedge here seems to be “humans are 9x.xxxxx similar in their genes.”

The funny part is they say much the same thing regarding complex mammalian genomes and humans.  It’s almost as if they’re deliberately or self-deceptively undermining the PC gods.

I think mice share 91 percent of the genes with us. Is that correct? The closest animal is the Chimpanzee with 98 percent of our genes.

Sorry JW. This just shows what happens when you have come back home after a 14 hour workday. My apologies.

Just one gene can make a big difference—as we have long known from those who suffer genetic illnesses—PKU is just one gene awry I think

Yeasts share about 50% of their genome with people

:

“Among the findings of this analysis is that the yeast genomes hold about 5,700 genes, many fewer than the estimated 10,000 of the fruitfly and 30,000 that humans have. Because of an ancient common ancestor, humans have about 2-3,000 genes in common with the yeast, generally genes that code for basic cell machinery.”

Huge differences between organisms can be the result of differences between relatively few genes:

“Researchers were also able to identify signals controlling gene expression that typically required complex experimentation and extensive biological knowledge to find. ‘One of the most important results of this analysis is that regulatory motifs can be read directly from the DNA sequence,’ says Kellis. ‘When comparing multiple genomes, these signals become apparent. We now have a complete list of the most strongly conserved regulatory motifs in yeast.’  The four different species of yeast are as different from each other as mice are from humans, yet across the four yeast genomes, all but roughly 12 genes are held in common. In other words, a mere 12 genes or so separate one yeast species from the next.  ‘It is striking. We saw the same thing between the human and mouse genomes. It may mean that genetic differentiation across different species is the result of very subtle events,’ Kellis says.”

Hey JW, I’d like to suggest a post topic for you: how about placing all this in context and explaining to us how different the races are, in your view?

So much ink is spilled over this and almost none of it comes from someone who approves of EGIs and is qualified to write about genes.

Just wondering, JW, but are you actually a genetic scientist or anything of the sort? I already asked Phil this in another thread, but I’m just curious to see if many professional scientists hang out here a lot.
