Posted by JRM on January 14, 2006, 04:31 PM | # The studies that led to these findings were performed by Dr. Doron Behar as part of his doctoral thesis, and were done under the supervision of Prof. Karl Skorecki of the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine and Research Institute at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and at the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa. Skorecki is best known for his 1997 discovery of genetic evidence indicating that the majority of modern-day Jewish men of the priestly tribe (kohanim) are descendants of a single common male ancestor, consistent with the biblical high priest, Aaron. I think skepticism is warranted because Skorecki had a claim, the Cohen Modal Haplotype shows common descent from Aaron, which turns out to be false. Suggests that certain mtDNA haplotypes which reduce energy production are NOT present in elite endurance athletes.

mtDNA appears to vary regionally because of differ optimal energy production rates with differ latitudes.
It would seem that the Ashkenazi have more European DNA than one would expect based on simple admixture rates. The European admixture contained cold adapted genes which would give a selection advantage over those with Middle Eastern genes.
Another thing to consider is the role that mtDNA may play in intelligence. mtDNA regulates energy production. The brain is the organ which uses a disproportionate amount of energy. Mutations in mtDNA would seem to affect brain function. Treatment in mitochrondial deficiencies increases IQ

All else being equal, it is better to have a smart mother than a smart father because the mother contributes more DNA (the mtDNA plus the extra genes on the X chromosome).
