Posted by Al Ross on November 25, 2005, 03:11 PM | # I suppose every society requires dissidents but I’m just not sure how many are required and although Chris Brand is to be admired for his principled stand against the forces of stupidity, his arguments on the subject of pedophilia detract from the helpfulness of his intellect. Perhaps he should have concentrated on obtaining a PhD in his field during his enforced absence from university teaching. 5

I suspect that he is still as mad as a bee at his treatment by his former Edinburgh Uni colleagues. Also, he may find it less than straightforward to write for a non-specialist audience. I am told he is an extremely amusing and personable fellow. In his blogging and letter-writing he seems to consistently employ the same jaunty, slightly smug but self-justifying voice - not realising, perhaps, that the reader interprets and misinterprets according to his or her own temper. Humourising pretty much everything takes a PG Wodehouse. Doing it to sweeten a message of bitterness would require Will Shakespeare in harness, too. Occasionally even then grave matters have to be treated with gravity, not as if they were all one big wheeze in a world sadly lacking Mr Brand’s superior knowledge. CB puts me in mind of the journalist and former demi-monde Julie Birchill who penned her biography with the title, “I Knew I Was Right”. CB is often right. John, have you ever suggested to Chris that he drop the whole adult-child sex thing? It’s difficult for me (and I expect most others) to take him seriously as a writer when he demonstrates such poor judgement on this issue.
