Bloodwinged blackbird: RISE
It’s not an English church with Buxtehude playing from speakers hidden behind the reredos, but in its own way this is a triumphant expression of the spirit of the West. Watch the whole thing. It changes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRwpZZqcXmU Posted by Søren Renner on Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at 10:29 AM in Comments:2
Posted by Fr. John on June 20, 2008, 04:01 PM | # There is nothing in this that bespeaks the Incarnationalism of YHWH God to Adamic man, as does the best of Western Culture does. This is sheer anarchism and Satanism, because all it is, is UGLINESS. The Historic Christian Faith clearly noted that Satan hates Christ and Christendom, and the roots of rock and roll lie in the NEGATION of that very Incarnation. Not only do I pass on this as being ‘an example of the West,’ I denounce it as rife with the world-negatation spirit of the Talmudics, and Nihilists of the Antichrist. In short, ‘You have a ghastly mess,” as Mr. Banks notes in “Mary Poppins.” 3

Posted by Guessedworker on June 20, 2008, 06:16 PM | # I did, and I’ve been wondering what I should have made of it. I grasped after some sense of timelessness ... stillness ... some bold measure of perception, sharp and birdlike like don Juan’s silver crow which, like don Juan, did not exist ... Really, I looked for anything, absolutely anything to prove the verity of your claim. But three lines of minimalist poetry and three or four over-amped rock instruments is too thin for me, spirit-wise. How about Sibelius’ fifth? Tippett’s second, if very 1950s, is so bloody optimistic it has to be worth a shout. Brahm’s Requiem ... Richard Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration ... 6
Posted by Captainchaos on June 20, 2008, 09:44 PM | # Here is my crack at the riddle of the “silver crow”. The secret lies in the writing of Nietzsche. Nietzsche posits that the essence of life is will to power. This what Randy Kraft represents. He was a queer serial killer whose especial thrill was genital mutilations. He snuffed two guys in my town as a matter of fact. Randy Kraft is the unalloyed, primal will to power. Their is no taboo he would not transgress in order to express his will to power. Nietzsche uses the metaphor of the sun and the moon to provoke thought as to the nature of philosophers vs. scholars. The sun is masculine, it is golden, it GENERATIVE of light; as are philosophers. They are value creators. Gold is the most precious metal. The moon is femine, it is silver, it is REFLECTIVE of light; as are scholars. They “reflect” upon and study the values that philosophers create. They are valuable instruments but not ends unto themselves. Silver is the second most precious metal. The crow is black, it is a scavenger. It is associated with death, the macabe, a sense of forboding. Crows like shiny things. They have a preference for silver but will accept gold. Thats as far as I’ve gotten. Maybe a little more thought and I can tie it up in a neat bow. 7
Posted by Captainchaos on June 20, 2008, 10:18 PM | # Nietzsche believed in a constant cycle of death and rebirth or “eternal recurrence.” He also talked of the horrible possibilty of an egalitarian, comfortable society in which no future “progress” would be made because the “pathos of distance” would have been so mitigated as to be effectively eliminated. This society will be populated by last men or “the last man.” The bow would have been unstrung. Try firing and arrow that way. America, at least in reputation, produces the most serial killers. The crows are circling. Lots of silver but very little gold. Apparently the will to power can be suppressed but it will explode here and there in nihilistic, unrefinded instances such as Randy Kraft. Man needs struggle. Hopefully productive struggle. Our society of comforts does not provide this. Randy Kraft is the steam that escaped the pressure cooker as it is about to explode. Time for a rebirth! 8

Posted by Guessedworker on June 21, 2008, 06:07 PM | # cc, The silver crow reference is to a story in Carlos Castaneda’s (fictional) account of his experiences with don Juan Matus, a supposed Yaqui holy man. As I recall, spirits were either Tonal (the essential) or Naguel (something else, I guess). As I recall, and mind you, it was not far short of forty years ago when I read this, the Tonals - or maybe the Naguals - manifested in the subject’s trance state as animals, among which were crows. These, however, appeared silver to one another, not black. Now Soren will doubtless correct that very distant memory, the relevance of which here is that Soren’s perception of the blackbird as blood-tinged is merely how blackbirds - art-music people - perceive one another. But I am a non-religionist, and for me that perception simply does not exist. Beyond that apologia I must say your interpretation of the much more important issue of the video is ingenius and intriguing, and surely deserving a full response from the poster. 10
Posted by Captainchaos on June 22, 2008, 05:11 PM | # Thanks for the generous compliments, GW. All I can say is that my interpretation seemed like good sense at the time. Cheers. 11
Posted by Fr. John on June 22, 2008, 06:56 PM | # Nietzsche was a nihilist. Try reading E. Michael Jones work on Nietzsche, and you come away with the feeling I mentioned before in my first reply. All that stuff is Satanic, is clearly anti-Incarnational, and ugly. And no, I did not- could not- get through to ANYTHING that might have been redeemable. Or, from a biblical perspective, “What concord hath Christ with Belial?” [St. Paul] Seeing the Jews as Belial would certainly give new impetus to any ‘Judeo-Christian’ talks in the future on matters related to; oh, say, ‘Israel’s right to exist.’ [NOT!] But no, we have to be concerned with sh**, and then have others dare to call it ‘worthwhile.’ Next entry: FROM THE NEW MIDDLE AGES TO A NEW DARK AGE: THE DECLINE OF THE STATE AND U.S. STRATEGY Previous entry: EU oligarchy is going to make the Irish vote again |

Uh, perhaps I am too bound up in traditional Western concepts of beauty (and I’ve never been fond of screamo music), but I have no clue as to why this video “...is a triumphant expression of the spirit of the West.”
Please enlighten me.
God bless,
Laurel
