The reality of diversity

Malegapuru Makgoba is the vice-chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.

He wrote a newspaper column earlier this year which strongly criticised white South African men. He accused them of being racists who could not adapt to a society “making every effort ... to transform itself into a just, equitable and non-racial society”. He wrote of them as “spoilers” who did not appreciate the new Constitution “which respects human dignity, diversity and non-sexism.”

So far the average Western leftist reading this will be cheering on Mr Makgoba. But they might like to read a little further. The kind of non-racist, diverse society Vice-Chancellor Makgoba wants white men to embrace is a purely black African one.

He asserts that “diversity” is to be celebrated around,

“a common vision, in our case an African vision. It should therefore become common sense that the white male soon learns to speak, write and spell in an African language; that he, like Johnny Clegg, learns to dance and sing like Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He should learn kwaito, dance like Lebo, dress like Madiba, enjoy eating “smiley and walkies” and attend “lekgotla” and socialise in our taverns.

“He must soon accept, value and imitate the things that matter dearly to Africans. The sooner this white male gets out of his denial mode, the sooner he will receive treatment and proper African rehabilitation.”

Remember, this isn’t written by some nonentity, but by a university vice-chancellor - by someone with authority in the new South Africa.

Note how easily he rattles off all the key modern concepts like diversity, non-racialism and equality, whilst at the same time, and with the same ease, expecting whites to give up their language and culture.

The lesson? Diversity is not meant to include us; nor should we expect equal treatment from those advocating “equality” and “social justice”. The new South Africa is the reality of what such principles are likely to lead to.

Mark you’re perhaps right that the average leftist likely would have misgivings about what he’d see on reading further, but there are many leftists out there who actually want to rid the world of whites (or stupidly think they want this)—“white people are mean,” and so on—who would warmly approve of what there is further on in the piece.

Diversity:

The Wal-Mart store in uptown New Orleans, built within the last year, survived the storm but was destroyed by looters. “They took everything—all the electronics, the food, the bikes,” said John Stonaker, a Wal-Mart security officer. “The only thing left are the country-and-western CDs.”

Makgoba is the leading theoretical Africanist in South Africa today.
In fact I was planning to write an article about him on the occasion when he will get his Jubilee Award in October 2005 for being a “good” black racist, see
